Mosovce
The village of Mošovce is one of the oldest and best known in the region of Turiec. This bustling centre of education and crafts is also a popular tourist and recreational destination which harnesses the local environmental wealth as well as providing diverse conditions and opportunities for cultural and social life for local people and tourists.
Mošovce lies in the south-eastern part of the Turčianska Basin. The village has long played an important role both regionally and nationally, as well as on the European continent. Steeped in tradition, history and culture, the village has made a name for itself through the development of education, literature and crafts.
The village has been the birthplace of many eminent personalities, including: Juraj Tesák-Mošovský, Michal Inštitoris-Mošovský, Štefan Krčméry, Frico Kafenda, Anna Lacková-Zora and others. The most famous figure from Mošovce is the great Slav poet, European writer, philosopher and evangelical priest [JG1] Ján Kollár.
Mošovce was once an important centre of Turiec crafts. The Museum of Crafts in Mošovce (Múzeum mošovských remesiel) has an exhibition where visitors can learn about the craftsmen's traditions. You can also visit Ján Kollár’s Family House – a single-storey timbered building which was built as a replica of the poet’s original family house, and a small museum, the Chamber of the Composer [JG2] Fric Kafenda. Noteworthy architectural landmarks include the Evangelical Church, the Catholic Holy Trinity Church, and the palace - a late Baroque, two-storey, three-bay building. The palace is adjoined by an English-style park, which has been declared a national cultural monument, with a neoclassical pavilion.
Mošovce is situated in a popular tourist and recreational area. Nestled in the foothills of Veľká Fatra, the village has a beautiful park and a network of leafy avenues which add to the beauty of its immediate surroundings. Nearby are the Gaderská and Blatnická valleys and other beautiful karst valleys, which makes the village a perfect destination for hikers, cyclists and other recreationists. After all, Veľká Fatra with its well-known tourist attractions is one of the most popular Slovak mountain ranges.
