The former saw mill – ulica Podgórska
In the mid 19th century, there were six mills operating in Kozy, all driven by the power of dammed water. Three of them were sawmills, which belonged to the so-called people’s industry. The largest pond to power a 17th-century mill was on a side of what is now ulica Podgórska. Its size is shown on an Austrian military map from the 1880s. A man-made dam, several metres high, created a water reservoir with an area of several hundred square metres. When the dammed water was released, the power it generated provided the opportunity for large-scale timber processing, meeting the needs of the local community. This area was customarily called “under the saw”. The former dyke is preserved in fragments. A manor register from 1782 contains the following record: “Wojciech Nowak settles on the lord’s land at the Saw. His field stretches from staw Pilny (Saw Pond) to the meadow by the stream...” Before the Second World War the farm around the former pond belonged to the mayor of Kozy Maciej Górowicz. Hence, the present-day ulica Podgórska is often commonly called Górowicz’s Road. The former farm features the remains of a detached cellar – a storage building typical of larger farmsteads.
