The Shrine at the “U Panienki” Pass
The stone pillar shrine with a picture of Our Lady of Częstochowa was erected in 1884 by Juliusz Beinlich (1830-1908), the head forester of the Kozy estate. According to legend, the shrine was built as a votive offering for his rescue. Reportedly, while walking through the forest, Beinlich was attacked by a pack of wolves. To save himself, he climbed a tree and started praying for rescue, and the wolves eventually left. Juliusz Beinlich was also responsible for the side altar in the parish church of St. Simon and St. Jude in Kozy. He died in 1908 and was buried in the parish cemetery in Kozy. The shrine at the “U Panienki” Pass is a popular resting spot, especially as it stands at the junction of the black trail from Małe Kozy, the yellow trail from Kozy, the red trail from Straconka, and the Papal Trail. In 2020, the shrine on the mountain pass was vandalised. Nearby is the so-called Marian Spring, discovered around 1980 by the local citizen Stanisław Jurzak who was looking for a spring to draw water from. During his subsequent visits to this place, he gradually covered the spring with stones. This is how the spot was popularized and named Marian Spring because of the special cult of the Virgin Mary in the area.
