The stone quarry
Since Kozy lies on a foothill of the Beskid Mały, stone was extracted here for centuries for various purposes, mainly construction. The first quarry operating on an industrial scale was established in the district of Małe Kozy in the second half of the 19th century. During the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, Italian prisoners of war worked there and some of them settled in Kozy. The quarry on the slope of Hrobacza Łąka was opened in the years 1910-1912. The plant produced road stone with a crushing strength of 2,100 kg per 1cm2. It was equipped with two Johan Kopf Canada - Vienna crushing machines, one Lanz 45 hp locomotive from 1912, and a cableway of 2510 metres down to the Kozy railway station was built. The cable cars transported stones until the early 1980s. Later stone was transported by trucks. The quarry employed 280 workers in the interwar period, and then 150 in the 1960s. Daily production was 200 tons of stone, and 150 tons in the 1960s. The first director of the quarry was Andrzej Rozmiarek, the administrator of the Czecz estate, and the administration offices were located in the manor buildings. Around 1921, the quarry was sold to the District Road Administration in Biała. The quarry was used until the beginning of the 1990s. Currently, it is an inactive excavation site with numerous natural and landscape features. One of them is an artificial pond which was formed when excavation workers encountered a natural spring. The quarry area is owned by the municipality of Kozy. It is used for cultural and sports events.
