The lower station of the quarry cableway
Established in 1910, the quarry in the Czecz estate was equipped with cable cars that transported the excavated material to the lower station near the railway track in the centre of Kozy. There the stone was reloaded into railway trucks standing on the siding. The cableway was launched in 1912. It carried the load over a distance of 2,510 m. Originally, the carriage system was supported on 18 wooden poles. The 50 carriages with a capacity of 200 kg, made by the Pohlik company in Leipzig, were transported with a 28 mm thick rope (full carriages) and a 19 mm thick rope (empty carriages). In 1928, the cableway was completely overhauled. The original carriages were replaced by new and larger ones made by the famous Leipzig engineering firm Adolf Bleichert & Co. The new carriages had a capacity of 500 kg and were transported by a 48 mm diameter wire for full carriages and a thinner 28 mm diameter wire for empty ones. The system was completed with a 19mm thick auxiliary wire and new support poles made of steel. In 1961 there was a fire at the lower cableway station. In the early 1980s the transport of excavated material by cableway was abandoned and replaced by truck transport. For many years the cableway was a feature of the landscape of Kozy. The section where it crossed the present-day ulica Krakowska had a special steel net above the road. Occassionally, some daredevils ventured a ride in a carriage filled with stones.
